You might have more trouble driving at night and colors may not be as vibrant as they once were. With over half of the population developing cataracts at <span id=\"more-350\"><\/span>some point in their lives, you are not alone.<\/p>\n<p>While some symptoms are common as you get older, such as a decreased ability to read fine print and visual floaters, other signs are a cause for concern. If you experience any of the following symptoms, contact your eye care provider immediately:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>vision suddenly is lost or blurry without explanation<\/li>\n<li>quick flashes of light appear out of nowhere<\/li>\n<li>your eyes hurt<\/li>\n<li>your eye becomes red or swollen<\/li>\n<li>you see double<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Most people begin to have trouble reading small print once they reach their early 40\u2019s. This is because the eyes take longer to focus, and eventually are not able to adjust to small print as they once did. Reading glasses will usually help this problem and there is no further need for intervention.<\/p>\n<p>If you notice that colors are less vibrant, and you have trouble driving at night, you may have a cataract starting. Cataracts are a slow buildup of protein deposits that cloud up the lens of your eye. Cataracts are now easily treated in outpatient surgery, and are no reason for concern. In fact, you may not need glasses once you have cataract surgery to remove the clouded lenses.<\/p>\n<p>One of the bigger eyesight emergencies is a retinal detachment. As eyes get older, retinal detachment is more likely to occur. Visually, you may see new floaters, or different colored flashes. If you have eyesight that has changed rapidly, you need to go see your eye doctor.<\/p>\n<p>With a retinal detachment, it is possible to repair the problem if it is caught in time. Waiting to see the eye doctor when there is a retinal detachment may result in a permanent loss of eyesight in that eye.<\/p>\n<p>Over the years, protect your eyesight with UV ray sunglasses and avoid harsh lighting whenever possible. Meet with your eye doctor regularly to establish how your eyesight is on a consistent basis. Harsh lighting, poor nutrition, and eye strain can all have a negative effect on your <span id=\"more-345\"><\/span>eyesight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wear Sunglasses in Harsh Light<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sunglasses will help protect your eyes from the bright light of the sun, but good sunglasses also offer your eyes protection from ultraviolet rays. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aoa.org\/patients-and-public\/caring-for-your-vision\/uv-protection?sso=y\" data-cke-saved-href=\"http:\/\/www.aoa.org\/patients-and-public\/caring-for-your-vision\/uv-protection?sso=y\">Exposure to UV rays<\/a> over the years can cause you to develop cataracts and can cause damage to your retinas. Keep your eyesight strong by wearing sunglasses with a UV protective coating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Eat a Well-Balanced Diet<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reason carrots are always touted as a food that is beneficial for your eyesight is because carrots are full of vitamin A. This vitamin is necessary for eye health, but other vitamins play a role in healthy eyesight too. Zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins E and C are all nutrients that help your eyesight remain strong.<\/p>\n<p>As you get older, it is more important than ever to eat a healthy diet to support your eyesight. Macular degeneration is a progressive disease of the eye, eventually causing blindness. The proper nutrients will help your body manage the effects caused from macular degeneration and may slow down the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Avoid Eye Strain When Possible<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you work all day under harsh lighting or if you sit in front of the computer screen all day, try to give yourself frequent breaks. While eye strain may not cause your eyesight to get worse, eye strain is a sign that your eyes are tired and need to relax.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attend Regular Eye Checkups<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As you get older, you probably feel as though you don\u2019t need to see your eye doctor as often. Your prescription probably hasn\u2019t changed much over the years, and visits may seem fruitless. To keep your eyesight in good shape, go to regular checkups with your doctor.
